Nyköping, city and port, part of the Södermanland administrative län (county), southeastern Sweden. It sits at the mouth of the Nykoping River, in the Baltic Sea. Before 1250 the town emerged as a marketplace close to the heights where Nykoping Castle was founded about 1260. With time this became one of the main strongholds of Sweden, especially during the time of Gustav I Vasa and Charles.
The town industry began with falls-powered ironworks and brass works; later, flour and textile mills and furniture factories emerged. As a transportation hub Oxelösund has replaced Nyköping. The historic buildings include St. Nicolai Church in the 12th century and the restored ruins of Castle Nyköping, now home to the Södermanland Museum.
Nyköping's more upmarket diners move to classy Skafferiet, served in arty farty surroundings for its simple but beautifully presented locavore cuisine like grilled lamb, moules-frites and beefsteak. Within Nyköpingshus's grounds, Sörmlands Museum includes Kungstornet, a whitewashed four-storey castle tower; Gamla Resident, the residence of the old governor; and therefore, the nearby Konsthallen.
A cozy cafe with an adjacent boutique store, 'Hellmans' is a comfortable lunch spot, with soups, salads, lasagne and focaccia, complimented by good coffee and excellent cakes to be enjoyed in the summer courtyard. Nyköping is one of the Swedish east coast's wildest archipelagos. You can enter the archipelago at Stendörren Nature Reserve without a ferry. Take a walk on the suspension bridges.
Nyköping has a variety of places to grab a beer, but nothing is spectacular and there is no 'blow your socks off' nightlife to think about. Castle Nykoping is situated where the Nykoping River flows into the harbour. In the King's Tower displays, one can see axes, daggers, and other mediaeval weapons used by knights and soldiers. Tourists rush in to see the Baltic Sea as well.
